The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award Ceremony

Chief District Court Judge Calvin Hill and Retired WLOS News Anchor Darcel Grimes to Receive North Carolina’s Highest Civilian Honor – The Order of the Long Leaf Pine

On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, North Carolina Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein will present Chief District Court Judge Calvin Hill and retired WLOS news anchor Darcel Grimes with the prestigious "Order of the Long Leaf Pine" award, the state's highest civilian honor. The award ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 17th, at 4:00 PM at the newly renovated YMI Cultural Center, located at 47 S. Market Street in Asheville.

The event will be marked by several distinguished speakers and guests. State Representative Caleb Rudow, also a candidate for Congress, will introduce Attorney General Stein, who will deliver remarks and present the awards to the honorees.

The ceremony will include special tributes to Judge Calvin Hill, led by Resident Superior Court Judge Alan Thornburg, Superior Court Judge Jackie Grant, and District Court Judge Patricia Young. On behalf of Darcel Grimes, WLOS’s Stan Pamphilis, news director Julie Fryes, and Brenda Mills, former City of Asheville official, will offer their reflections and remarks.

Judge Hill and Darcell Grimes are recognized for their extensive contributions to North Carolina. Judge Calvin Hill has served the community for many years in the legal field, earning widespread respect for his leadership and dedication to justice. Darcel Grimes, a beloved figure in local media, served as a news anchor at WLOS for decades, providing trusted journalism and building a deep connection with viewers throughout Western North Carolina.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is awarded to individuals who have shown exemplary service to the state and their communities, making a lasting impact on North Carolina’s cultural, economic, or civic life. This momentous event will honor the remarkable achievements of these two influential leaders who have left an indelible mark on Asheville and the state.
